Chiefs Reload With New Focus After Blowing Super Opportunity

Kansas City Chiefs Draft Review and 2022 Season Preview

Last season the Kansas City Chiefs seemingly had a third consecutive Super Bowl berth.  All Kansas City had to do was beat the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game.  Kansas City was a 7-point home favorite and led 21-10 at the half.  But the Chiefs made numerous errors that cost them a 27-24 overtime loss.  In particular, the Chiefs messed up late drives in the first and second half that cost them a Super Bowl best payout.  Fans and gamblers were stunned at the implosion.  It left a bitter taste for everyone concerned.

CashBet Odds Analysis – Chiefs Remain Strong Public Brand

Kansas City has hosted the AFC Championship Game for the past four seasons.  They made the Super Bowl in the 2019 and 2020 campaigns.  Most important of all, they scored a best sportsbook online Super Bowl win over San Francisco in February 2020.  Kansas City has had one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL during this run.  Namely, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are two of the best performers at their respective positions in the game.

As a result of this betting on Super Bowl success and notoriety, the Chiefs are one of the most popular and expensive teams on the board.  Kansas City was once the biggest moneymaker against the NFL odds.  But their success drew too much casual and fan money, driving down the Chiefs’ betting value in the process.

As an example of the Chiefs’ declining Super Bowl betting odds value, in 2021, KC was 12-5 straight up but covered only eight times.

Playground Ball Damages Kansas City Value

It is true that public demand has made the Chiefs a consistent Super Bowl betting overlay.   But that is not the only reason for the Chiefs’ weaker board value.  Another factor that prevents the Chiefs from covering games is their style of play.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is so good that he has given Kansas City a false sense of security.  Mahomes is a well-regarded comeback artist that has pulled a victory out of the jaws of defeat numerous times.  As a result of his heroics, the Chiefs developed a habit of jacking around for three quarters.  And then they would turn the game over to Mahomes for the NFL gambling bailout.

Kansas City has often resembled a playground team with the best player on the field.  However, in the NFL, that will eventually burn a team.  In turn, that is what happened to their Chiefs.  Over the past two years, Kansas City’s lack of discipline and bad habits came back to bite them.  Their Super Bowl loss to Tampa Bay and the playoff debacle to the Bengals were because of the Chiefs’ lack of polish.

2022 Kansas City Chiefs Draft

On the whole, the Chiefs graded well for their draft selections.  Kansas City made a concerted effort to fortify a below-par defense in 2021.  In the first round, cornerback Trent McDuffie of the University of Washington and EDGE rusher George Karlaftis of Purdue were picked.  But the draftee catching the most attention was wide receiver Skyy Moore of Western Michigan.  Moore was taken to replace the traded game-breaker Tyreek Hill.  The Chiefs believe Moore has the tools to impact games like that Hill did.

Chiefs to Face a much Tougher AFC West

Accordingly, the Chiefs have won the AFC West for six consecutive seasons.  But this year will be the most challenging that Kansas City has faced since that dynasty started.  The Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers, and Las Vegas Raiders are all vastly improved.
