Last year Ben Roethlisberger was a shell of himself. Pittsburgh’s offense wasn’t an asset. In comparison, the Steel Curtain defense was rusty as well. Despite having NFL defensive player of the year TJ Watt. But Pittsburgh rolled hot dice in close games and caught a couple of huge breaks in Week 18. That led to a Super Bowl-best playoff berth at 9-7-1. But the Steelers got blasted in the playoffs by the Kansas City Chiefs, proving they did belong. Coach Mike Tomlin kept his streak of non-losing seasons alive. And Roethlisberger ended his career on a respectable note.

2022 Pittsburgh Steelers – CashBet Odds Overview
Naturally, when a future Hall of Fame quarterback retires, there are concerns of a big best sportsbook online collapse. But the truth about the 2022 Steelers is they shouldn’t miss Big Ben. For the last part of 2020 and all of 2021, Roethlisberger was not very good. Consider that he was too worried about getting clobbered behind a bad offensive line. So to compensate, he was getting rid of the ball fast.
Roethlisberger bogged down the offense. His average depth of target was 7.1. Second-lowest among all regular quarterbacks. Jared Goff was last at 6.8. Also, Roethlisberger had the lowest grade of all 37 qualified QBs. Although he had a great Betting on Super Bowl career, he was not productive at the end. The Steelers won despite him.
Now Pittsburgh hopes they have an immediate Super Bowl betting odds upgrade. The Steelers were happy to draft Kenny Pickett, who played for the University of Pittsburgh. He was the only quarterback drafted in the first round. Further, no other quarterback went in the second round.
Previously, Mitchell Trubisky signed with Pittsburgh in March. It is possible that he may begin the season ahead of Pickett. But he’ll have to play exceptionally well to hold off the local hero. The gig should be Pickett’s early in the regular season, if not sooner. Indeed, The quarterback situation is what gets Super Bowl betting headlines. It overshadows that the entire Steelers roster is in transition.
Only two players remain from the team’s last playoff win in January of 2017, and one is kicker Chris Boswell. The other is defensive lineman Cam Heyward, who is 33 years old. A third player from that last team to win in the postseason, defensive lineman Stephon Tuitt, retired.
Cause by their winning tradition, gamblers expect the Steelers to be good. But the recent Pittsburgh team was not as good as its record in 2021. The Steelers would not have qualified if not for the expanded playoff system. There remain significant questions at the offensive line, inside linebacker, and secondary.
If the Steelers fall back, it won’t be because they don’t have Roethlisberger. It will be because they started to slip last season. But that was easy to overlook because of some lucky breaks late in the year. It is true that the Steelers aren’t devoid of talent. There are just facing more issues than usual. And the betting public is accustomed to them avoiding a downturn.
On the whole, the Steelers usually aren’t too active in free agency. But they spent $80.535 million to acquire guard James Daniels, linebacker Myles Jack, center Mason Cole, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and cornerback Levi Wallace. Also, they resigned cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to a two-year, $8 million deal. None of those signings are earth-shaking. But they’re smart additions and will help across the roster.
The biggest loss in free agency was receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. But his career stalled after a great start. The draft was solid. Starting with quarterback Kenny Pickett, receiver George Pickens, and defensive tackle DeMarvin Leal filling needs.
