Franklin Committed to Penn State – At Least for 2022

CFB 2022 Future Betting: Penn State Nittany Lions

At the onset of his arrival as Penn State head coach James Franklin was celebrated as a home run hire.  And the Pennsylvania native said that coaching the Nittany Lions was his dream job.  Franklin worked miracles as the Vanderbilt headman, making Penn State’s national championship dreams realistic.  Certainly, Franklin has had his share of College football betting success in Happy Valley.  In 2016 he led the Nits to the Big Ten championship.  And he has led the program to three top-10 finishes.  Most important of all, Franklin is an ace recruiter.

Penn State Nittany Lions CashBet 2022 Odds and Analysis – Future of the Past

On the whole, Penn State fans think of their beloved program as a national sportsbook power.  Penn State was a perennial power and 2-time national champion under the late Joe Paterno.  But they were also disgraced at the end of the Paterno era.  Yet that success has meant for the highest expectations.  And for a Penn State coach to never glance elsewhere.

Franklin has produced three double-digit win seasons.  Overall, his record is a solid 67-34 as Penn State head coach.  But the past two years have been far below par.  Records of 4-5 and 7-6 brought out the wolves.  Additionally, Franklin has been linked to several high-profile jobs.  Last year there were serious Betting on college football rumors about Franklin getting serious about taking the USC Trojans position.

Franklin and the Nittany Lions started off the 2021 bet on NCAAF season with a 5-0 record.  But when he made hints that he might leave and never denied the USC stories, it became a major distraction.  An injury to quarterback Sean Clifford added to the angst.  Penn State limped home to a 7-5 record and 4-5 marker in the Big Ten Conference.  Thus, Nittany Lion fans began to scream for Franklin to get out of Dodge.  Instead, Franklin signed a ten-year $75 million extension.  And Happy Valley was not in a celebratory mood when the news was announced.

In sum, Penn State fans love Franklin’s recruiting.  But they despise his in-game coaching.  Franklin’s teams habitually implode against to-tier opposition in the final moments.  Also, Franklin’s teams are notorious for poor clock management.  And the Nittany Lions have not gotten up to speed on the NIL and transfer portal changes.  Although Franklin has been assured NIL will be aggressively covered in the future.  Penn State is coming off its worst two-year stretch since 2003 and 2004.

The Annual Gauntlet

Of great concern is that Penn State plays in the Big Ten East Division.  To be exact, the Big Ten East is one of the toughest divisions in college football.  Only the SEC West is for sure better.  Thus, Penn State must play the Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Michigan State Spartans each season.  And then there is always tough cross-over Betting on NCAAF matchups from the West Division.  Getting through that schedule undefeated is a daunting task.

2022 Prospects for Penn State

At the beginning of camp, Franklin is firmly ensconced as the Penn State head coach.  Departure rumors have died, and there is a sense of focus in the program again.   The offensive line has not done its job, harming the ground game.  But super senior Sean Clifford returns at quarterback.  Clifford has started 33 games and has produced over 8000 total yards.  The Nittany Lions could roar back with a huge 2022 season if the offensive line improves.
