Alexa Grasso

The 29-year-old Grasso (14-3, 6-3 UFC) is on a three-fight winning streak and she looks to extend it in her upcoming fight against Araujo. She once fought current UFC women’s strawweight titleholder Carla Esparza in a three-round clash that gained Fight of the Night honors. The Mexican had a victory over former UFC championship contender Karolina Kowalkiewicz. After losing to Esparza, Grasso has strung up three consecutive wins over Kim Ji-yeon, Maycee Barber and Joanne Wood to move up the 125-pound rankings. Although most of her fights have reached the full route, Grasso has the punching power and the skills to stop her opponents. Her one-round submission victory over Wood in March showed that she can also stop a foe via submission.

Viviane Araujo

The stint of Araujo (11-3, 5-2 UFC) in the UFC has been outstanding as she emerged victorious in five of her seven bouts. The Brazilian has proven herself to be a resilient MMA fighter, with most of her bouts ending via the full route. She debuted in the UFC as a bantamweight and knocked out Talita Bernardo. She would then win three of her four matches before succumbing to Katlyn Chookagian via unanimous decision in May last year. She would make a comeback in the octagon in May and fight Andrea Lee. She survived an early knockdown to beat Lee by unanimous decision. It will be the third time Araujo is booked to face Grasso as the previous bouts were canceled due to injury and visa problems. Araujo knows how to stop her opponents as seven of her 11 wins come either by knockout or submission.

Grasso vs Araujo Summary

This encounter has the makings of a “Fight of the Night” performance written around it. Araujo and Grasso are looking to emerge victorious and climb up the flyweight ladder to improve their chances of battling for the UFC 125-pound title. Araujo is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt which she can use as an advantage in her fight against Grasso, who is a purple belt in BJJ. However, both fighters know how to knock out opponents, too, with Grasso winning four of her bouts by the abbreviated route while Araujo emerging victorious by knockout three times. The match will more likely end by decision as both fighters are expected to respect each other’s capabilities and will wait for a clear opening before executing their attacks. MMA oddsmakers are giving Grasso a slight advantage on their opening bets due to her winning streak but do not sleep on Araujo as she has the capabilities to win a big fight and move up the rankings as well.
