NHL Betting: Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Edmonton Oilers Odds and Picks (January 30, 2021)

NHL Betting: Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Edmonton Oilers

Last week the Oilers and Maple Leafs met in Toronto.  An overload of skill was on the ice.  Gamblers touted both games as certain NHL betting overs.  Expectations for continuous goal-scoring prevailed for that doubleheader of highly skilled teams.  Instead, the games were tight and, at times, tedious.  Now the series shifts to Edmonton.  And a prime-time Saturday night matchup on NHL Network.  Goal scoring potential remains on each side.  The question is if the coaches will loosen up.  Both teams consistently clogged the neutral zone at Toronto.  Regardless, the stars will be out at Rogers Center.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Edmonton Oilers CashBet Wagering Analysis

Naturally, the Maple Leafs are the biggest sportsbook brand in the NHL.  Toronto boasts a generational worldwide fan base.  Thus, oddsmakers charge full retail on the Maple Leafs.  Once upon a time, gamblers viewed Edmonton as a team on the come.  Connor McDavid was the reason why.  The top pick of the 2015 NHL Draft is an elite superstar talent.  However, the Oilers have not surrounded him with a strong supporting cast.  Gamblers have become wary of backing the Oil.  Failure to provide a return on investment has worn out former Edmonton backers.

Leafs in Full Bloom but Question Remain

Overall, the Maple Leafs are 5-2 with 2-4 under the total.  Toronto has Betting on NHL metrics of 13th for goal scoring and 13th for goals allowed.  The power play is a strength for Toronto.  To illustrate, they rank 3rd with the man advantage.  But the Maple Leafs rank 14th for the penalty kill.

Thus far, Mitch Marner and John Tavares lead with four goals each.  Austin Matthews adds three goals and three assists.  Goaltender Frederik Anderson is under par with a .898 save percentage and 2.81 goals-against average.

Oilers Under Par as Frustration Mounts

To summarize, the Oilers are 3-4 with 3-3 on totals.  Edmonton ranks 25th for goal scoring and 23rd for goals allowed.  Equally important is a power play ranking of 25th.  Penalty killing shows the Oilers ranked 17th.  These dreadful metrics are among the worst in pro hockey betting.  What frustrates fans and gamblers is the talent level of the Oil.  Edmonton is considered the biggest underachiever in the NHL.

Center Connor McDavid leads with four goals, six assists, and a +2.  So too does Leon Draisaitl has three goals, six assists, and a +5.  Defenseman Darnell Nurse adds one goal, two assists, and a +7.  So far, goaltender Mikko Koskinen has a .907 save percentage and 3.18 goals-against average.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Edmonton Oilers Against the Spread

Late on, the Maple Leafs have lost eight of their last 13 hockey betting road matchups.  Four of their last five away games stayed under the total.  Edmonton has lost five of their previous six games at Rogers Center.  While five of the Oilers’ last eight home games went under the total.

Toronto has utterly dominated their series with the Oilers.  To illustrate, the Maple Leafs have won 15 of their last 19 games against the Oil.  Just two of the previous seven games between these teams went over the total.  Toronto has won four games in a row at Edmonton.  And then the last two of those games stayed under total.

Last week these teams split a two-game series at Toronto.  Edmonton got the money in a 3-1 win on January 20.  Toronto won the second game 4-2 on January 22.

In this situation, the Oilers should show desperation.  Following their weak start, Edmonton knows they must quickly regroup.  Against Toronto, the Oilers will get an attractive NHL gambling price.
