Texas Tech Hosts Houston in Expected Wild West Shootout

Houston Cougars vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders Betting Information and Odds

Last year was one of the most impactful in the history of the Houston Cougars program.  Houston was invited to join the Big 12 Conference for the 2023 season.  Most important of all, the Cougars went 12-2 and made the American Athletic Conference championship game.  The Cougars ended on a high NCAAF bets note by winning their bowl game.  But on Saturday, head coach Dana Holgorsen and his Cougs have a dangerous tilt at the Texas Tech Red Raiders.  Texas Tech begins the coach Joey McGuire era with great enthusiasm.

Houston Escapes Near Disaster

The Houston Cougars are coming off a 37-35 win at Texas San Antonio as 3.5-point favorites.  The game went over the betting on College Football total of 61.

Dana Holgorsen is not thrilled for Clayton Tune to run the ball.  Cause by concern for his health.  But Tune leaped over a defender to score on a 13-yard run to spark the 24th-ranked Cougars.  UH escaped with a victory over UTSA in three overtimes.  Tune was 22 of 32 for 206 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 51 yards and a TD.  Houston rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second half at the Alamodome.

Thus, UH snapped UTSA’s 10-game home winning streak.

Tune ran for three first-down conversions in the final drive of regulation.  Including two where he scrambled out of the pocket after not finding an open receiver.

After Tune scored on a 1-yard run and threw for the 2-point conversion in the second overtime, Roadrunners quarterback Frank Harris matched the output.  He ran in the conversion after tossing a touchdown pass to De’Corian Clark.

Late on, Holgorsen expressed concerns over crowd noise being pumped into the stadium.  The NCAA forbids such practices, and UTSA vehemently denied the charge.

Specifically, a turning point in the game was when UTSA was called for an illegal substitution penalty with 4:12 remaining in the third quarter.  The error resulted in a first down instead of a turnover on downs.  The penalty was called after the Roadrunners stopped the Cougars for no gain on fourth-and-1.  Accordingly, Houston scored on that drive, cutting UTSA’s lead to 21-14.

Following a slow start, Tune demonstrated he could lead the Cougars with his poise.  In addition to converting third downs by running, Tune threw 32 passes without an interception.

Correlate the Cougars should remain in the AP Top 25.  And could move up in the rankings following a close victory against a tough opponent on the road.  The Roadrunners had won 11 of 12 at the Alamodome before losing to UH.

Promising Debut for Texas Tech

The Texas Tech Red Raiders are coming off a 63-10 win over Murray State as 38-point home favorites.  The game went over the bet on NCAAF total of 63.5.  In sum, Donovan Smith came off the bench to throw four touchdown passes.  And Tahj Brooks ran for three scores.  It was a promising win in coach Joey McGuire’s debut Saturday night.

To show, Smith had scoring tosses on his first two passes after replacing Tyler Shough in the first half.  McGuire indicated he planned to play both.  But he said at halftime Shough was injured and probably wouldn’t return.

Shough had his 2021 season ended after four games with a broken left collarbone.  Last week he was on the sideline in the second half with a sling on that same non-throwing shoulder.  McGuire said the team would know more about the injury this week.
