Dern Seeks to Regain Form Against Hill

Namely, Mackenzie Dern and Angela Hill begin their 2023 top online sportsbook campaigns with a main event pairing that should answer a lot of questions.  The fight will clear up where each woman stands.  Both combatants are trying to advance in the highly competitive strawweight division.

At the beginning of her UFC bets career, Dern posted 11 wins in her first dozen appearances.  However, Dern has dropped two of her last three bouts.  At the same time, she was struggling to find a way to implement her dynamic grappling game.  Although she’s improved her feet, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend is best when she can instigate grappling sequences and tie-ups.  Dern shows incredible control and the ability to attack from multiple positions.

Meanwhile, Hill arrives in Sin City looking to build on MMA betting victories over Loopy Godinez and Emily Ducote at the end of 2022.  “Overkill” remains a permanent presence in the rankings.  Correlate, she is a durable, dangerous test for anyone in the division.  But Hill will need to use her footwork and movement if she wants to keep things standing against Dern on Saturday.  Will the submission ace find a way to drag this fight to the canvas?  On the other hand, can Hill force Dern to battle her on her feet?

Shahbazyan and Hernandez Make for a Compelling Co-Main Event

Middleweights and Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS) graduates Shahbazyan and Anthony Hernandez meet in the co-main event.  Late on, both are looking to build on recent triumphs.

Last time out, Shahbazyan ended a one-year sabbatical and three-fight losing streak.  In December, he collected a second-round stoppage win over Dalcha Lungiambula at UFC 282.  Still just 25 years old, he still has plenty of time to reclaim the buzz that accompanied his 4-0 start in the UFC.  At the onset of his career, he began with an 11-0 record.  Most important of all, a victory on Saturday would prove that he is on the road back toward the rankings.

Late on, Hernandez dropped two of his first three appearances inside the Octagon.  Since then, he has cobbled together a three-fight winning streak.  And those were bookended by impressive submission wins.  Last year, Hernandez tapped out multiple-time BJJ world champion Rodolfo Vieira.  And then he began his 2023 run with a similar second-round finish over Marc-Andre Barriault.  Next, adding a unanimous decision win over Josh Fremd at UFC 273 in between.

At the onset of his career, Shahbazyan showed flashes of greatness.  At the same time, Hernandez has displayed similar glimpses in recent bouts.  Thus, it will be interesting to see which of these two ascending middleweight talents can dictate the terms of engagement.  Both have championship aspirations, and the man that leaves the APEX with a victory on Saturday can seize the initiative.
