2022 American and National League Cy Young Award Favorites

2022 American and National League Cy Young Award Favorites

Although Jacob deGrom is considered the best pitcher in baseball, he is an example of modern baseball.  Consider that deGrom has never come close to being a 20-game winner.  The most innings that he has ever pitched in a season is 217.  Yet deGrom’s reputation for excellence is well-founded with the MLB betting odds.  When deGrom’s numbers are put up against Cy Young Award winners of the past, he pales in comparison.  Pitchers are treated like breakable glass that must be bubble-wrapped.  Once again, deGrom began the 2022 season on the 10-day disabled list.

National League Favorites

Jacob deGrom Image Surpasses Reality

It is true that when he is on the mound, Jacob deGrom is a true sportsbook asset.  Despite his reputation for perpetual injuries, deGrom remains the National League Cy Young Award favorite.  In 2018 and 2019, deGrom won the National League Cy Young Award.  But deGrom posted records of 15-10 in 2017 and 10-9 in 2018.  Part of that was based on deGrom being on a mediocre but overrated Mets team.  Veteran baseball gamblers scoffed at those numbers.  Once upon a time, a pitcher needed 20 wins even to be a Cy Young candidate.

Scherzer Could Bring Value with Advantage of Playing for the Mets

First, Max Scherzer is a 2-time betting on baseball Cy Young Award winner in the National League.  He won it in 2017 with the Washington Nationals and in 2021 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Scherzer is a 6-time National League All-Star.  Last year Scherzer was 15-4 with a 2.46 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, and 236 strikeouts in 179.1 innings of work.  Those are Cy Young numbers.

Burnes Raises a Brew for the Crew

Last season Corbin Burnes broke out with an All-Star appearance and the NL Cy Young Award.  Burnes was 11-5 with a 2.43 earned run average and WHIP of 0.94.  He struck out 234 batters in 167 innings of work.  Milwaukee was an MLB gambling underdog that defied the experts in winning the National League Central.  Burnes was a key reason why that happened.

American League Favorites

Gerrit Cole Not Getting Full Yankee Support

Of course, Gerrit Cole is best known for his record-setting 2020 contract with the Yankees.  Cole has been quite effective with the MLB betting lines at New York.  Last year he was 16-8 with a 3.23 earned run average and WHIP of 1.06.  Cole struck out 243 batters in 181.1 innings of work.  In sum, Cole is a 4-time All-Star that has never won the Cy Young.  Cole’s biggest problem is having to carry an overpaid team of underachievers.

Shane Bieber Aims to Be Cleveland’s Guardian on the Hill

Shane Bieber is a 2-time American League All-Star and won the 2020 Cy Young Award.  Bieber has had the disadvantage of playing on a Cleveland team that has not been a dominant baseball betting winner.  Last year Bieber was 7-4 with a 3.17 earned run average and WHIP of 1.21.  Bieber pitched only 96.2 innings of work due to a right shoulder injury
