Iowa and Kentucky Clash at Citrus Bowl Betting

On the whole, the Iowa Hawkeyes had another successful College football betting season.  Consider that Iowa reached the height of being ranked 2nd in the nation after a 23-20 home win over Penn State.  That success was built on a rock-ribbed defense that covered for a cumbersome plodding offense.  Following the win over Penn State, Iowa was exposed for being half a team in a 24-7 home loss to Purdue.  At that point, any chance for a College Football Playoff berth was nuked.  Iowa proved to be a good but not great football team.

2022 Vrbo Citrus Bowl CashBet Odds Analysis

Kentucky will draw plenty of Bitcoin sportsbook public support based on the conference affiliation.  Also, the under is a popular choice based on both teams’ defenses.

Kentucky Romps Into Citrus Bowl With Momentum

Last time out, Kentucky routed Louisville 52-21 as 3-point away dogs.  The game went over the Betting on college football total of 57.5.  UK stands at 9-3 straight up, 8-4 against the spread, and 8-4 over/under.  Overall, UK has NCAAF metrics of 42nd for total offense and 30th for scoring offense.  And then on defense, Wildcats have CFB ranks of 26th overall and 32nd for points allowed.

Iowa Blasted and Exposed in Big Ten Title Game

In the Big Ten Championship Game, Iowa was destroyed by Michigan 42-3.  The Hawkeyes were 11.5-point dogs. Also, the Hawkeyes and Wolverines game went over the bet on NCAAF total of 43.5.  Now Iowa stands at 10-3 straight up, 7-6 against the spread, and 6-7 over/under.  Overall, Iowa has CFB metrics of 123rd for total offense and 96th for scoring offense.  While defensively, the Hawkeyes have NCAAF marks of 19th overall and 14th for points allowed.

For several years Iowa has lacked a credible offense to be taken seriously as a Big Ten championship contender.  Consider Iowa’s 2015 Rose Bowl season in which they were blasted 45-16 by Stanford.  That was a warning that head coach Kirk Ferentz never heeded.  Ferentz ranks second only to the late great legend Hayden Fry in Hawkeye football lore.  Accordingly, Ferentz runs a consistently solid program that, while not spectacular, gets the job done.

Early in his Iowa career from 2002 through 2004, Ferentz led the Hawkeyes to three consecutive top-8 in the nation’s final rankings.  However, his program had a criminal element that the Iowa administration found distasteful.  Ferentz began to go with “safer” choices.  Since then, Iowa has never again been a serious top ten threat.

Perhaps a problem that is just as big is Ferentz’s offensive coordinator.  Specifically, Brian Ferentz, Kirk’s son, has been the OC for the past five seasons.  Ferentz is a former Iowa lineman that played a couple of seasons in the NFL.  At the start of his coaching career was tutelage under Bill Belichick in New England.  Following three years, he joined up with his father as the offensive line coach.  By 2017 he was offensive coordinator.  Iowa has never had anything close to an explosive offense with Brian in command.  Now that leads to the question of if the problem is weak recruiting or weak coordinating.

Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Kentucky Wildcats Against the Spread

Iowa has failed to cover five of their last seven games.  While the Hawkeyes are 4-1 over the total in their most recent five outings.  Late on, Kentucky is 8-4 vs. the odds in their last 12 games.  The Wildcats are 4-1 over the total in their most recent five matchups. Kentucky has paid in four of their last five outings against the Big Ten.
