Clemson Determined to Rebound from Setback Betting Season 

Last year was subpar by the standards of the Clemson Tigers.  Clemson finished only 10-3.  Also, they missed the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Game.  Correlate that the Tigers defeated the Iowa State Cyclones 20-13.  It is true that most programs would celebrate such a campaign.   However, at Howard’s Rock, it was unacceptable.  Consider that from 2015 through 2020, Clemson made the College Football Playoff every season.  Additionally, the Tigers made the National Championship game four times in that span.  They won two national championships.  For the 2022 season, the path looks clear for a playoff return.

Now for Clemson to return to the betting on college football Playoff, its offense must return to being an asset.  At the beginning is concern about quarterback DJ Uiagalelei.  Uiagalelei struggled in his first full season as a starter.  Expectations were sky-high for Uiagalelei after he impressed in 2020 starts against Boston College and Notre Dame as a freshman.  But in 2022, he was inaccurate and made poor decisions often.  Also, he had the annoying habit of getting rid of the ball late.

Uiagalelei entered the 2021 campaign as one of the bet on NCAAF Heisman favorites.  Instead, he finished with more interceptions (10) than touchdown passes (nine).  As a team, Clemson’s passing offense was 103rd nationally in yards per game.  First-year offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter is working with Uiagalelei to make him more comfortable.  But five-star freshman Cade Klubnik is pushing the junior.  But Swinney insists that it is Uiagalelei’s job.

Clemson returns its top three running backs in Will Shipley, Kobe Pace, and Phil Mafah.  Meanwhile, the offensive line returns four starters and should be improved.  Tight end Davis Allen is the main target of the receivers.  He could emerge as one of the top tight ends in the country.

Strong Defense Gets a New Leader

Despite the departure of longtime coordinator Brent Venables to become the Oklahoma head coach, Clemson’s defense should be one of the best in the country.  First-year defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin has a unit stocked with 5-star talent.  Swinney believes seven of his defensive linemen will be drafted into the NFL next year.  Thus, there is a strong betting on the NCAAF foundation.

Overall, Clemson ranked eighth nationally in total defense last season, allowing 310.2 yards per game.  But gamblers expect the Tigers post even better numbers on that side of the ball this year.

Clemson has a major asset in kicker BT Potter.  In fact, Potter should be one of the best kickers in the country for 2022.  Potter has a powerful leg combined with accuracy.  Last year he was 21-of-26 on field goals.

Head coach Dabo Swinney will have a new but talented team for 2022.  And a squad dedicated to getting back to the College Football Playoff.
