The transfer portal window and NBA draft decision deadline have come and gone.  Now rosters across college basketball are much closer to set than when the season ended nearly two months ago.  While a few big fish in the portal have yet to find a destination, it’s a good time to refresh the national landscape.  Gamblers are looking for angles and the top 25 teams for the 2023–24 season.  Most see a blueblood name-brand resurgence headlining the top of the sport. Indeed, the March Madness betting favorites are the usual suspects.

Duke Blue Blood Devils Retain Power Roster

At the onset, the Duke Blue Devils have rare amounts of player retention in 2023–24.  Following years of one-and-done carrying the day in Durham.  Duke brings back four starters from last year’s team.  Specifically losing only up-and-down freshman center Dereck Lively II from its ’22–23 starting unit.

Namely, Kyle Filipowski averaged 15 points and nine rebounds as a freshman.  And he should be among the nation’s top online sportsbook assets this season.  At the same time, Tyrese Proctor showed flashes of stardom.  Despite playing as one of the youngest players in the nation a season ago.  Further help comes with the stability of a senior point guard in Jeremy Roach.  Certainly, this is a team that can cut down the nets.

Kansas Lands the Big Transfer Fish to Loaded Roster

Last season Bill Self’s Kansas Jayhawks team played small ball.  Gamblers expect the Jayhawks to return to their more traditional bully-ball ways this season.  First, KU added the best transfer in the portal in Michigan’s big man Hunter Dickinson.  Dickinson should be one of the best frontcourt players in the sport in Self’s offense.  That means bumping glue guy KJ Adams to power forward after playing center most of last season.  In turn, that could create some shooting concerns.

Still, Dickinson joins a high-level floor general in Dajuan Harris.  Also, there is a deep stable of wings like veterans Kevin McCullar and Nick Timberlake.  Additionally, there are high-scoring youngsters Arterio Morris and Elmarko Jackson.  Kansas is a national March Madness Betting title contender.

Can Purdue Boiler Up When It Matters Most?

To illuminate, Zach Edey’s decision to return for his senior season is massive for the Boilermakers.  And that welcome news marks the second straight season the sport’s national player of the year is returning to school.  Of course, Edey is the nation’s most dominant player.  Hence, Purdue will be among the nation’s best teams in the regular season.

Now the bigger question is whether they can exorcise their March demons.  Last year’s calamity against Fairleigh Dickinson was the latest bet on NCAA basketball heartbreak for Purdue.

Now guards Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer getting older should help.  Still, this group lacks the big-time shotmaking gamblers want to see in a team that can cut down the nets.

Izzo Looks for One More Final Four

Michigan State has the right mix of talent, experience, and coaching to be a Final Four team.  Correlate the high-scoring backcourt trio of Tyson Walker, A.J. Hoggard, and Jaden Akins returns for another year.  Furthermore, the Spartans have brought in reinforcements in the form of a top-five recruiting class.  Including three top-40 recruits.  Center Xavier Booker has a high upside.  However,  big wing Coen Carr might be the most well-positioned to contribute immediately.  And for the long term, watch for point guard Jeremy Fears to emerge as a Big Ten star.
