Veterans wage war inside the octagon as Donald Cerrone takes on Joe Lauzon in a lightweight confrontation for UFC on ESPN 37. Cerrone and Lauzon will lock horns on Saturday, June 18, at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, as one of the featured clashes in the Calvin Kattar-Josh Emmett main event. The match is scheduled at 7:00 PM ET and it is aired on pay-per-view and streamed at UFC Fight Pass.
Cerrone and Lauzon have been on the fight scene for more than a decade and both were involved in high-profile, UFC clashes in the past. Both are known for giving their hearts out during their matches and are among the top three fighters that earned the most post-fight bonuses in their UFC careers. However, octagon rust might pose an issue for both Lauzon and Cerrone as the two have not fought for a combined 45 months. Nevertheless, Cerrone is favored to win the clash and end his five-match losing streak over Lauzon as UFC betting odds place a premium on Cowboy’s ring experience as he last appeared inside the octagon in May 2021, compared to J-Lau, who has not fought since October 2019.

Donald Cerrone
If there is one guy who has a knack for earning post-match bonuses, it’s Donald Cerrone (36-16-0). The Cowboy is currently tied with former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira for post-fight bonus awards in UFC history with 18. The veteran has fought the likes of Benson Henderson, Conor McGregor, Rafael dos Anjos, Robbie Lawler, Jorge Masvidal, Tony Ferguson and Anthony Pettis. He is tied for the most wins in UFC history (23) and was involved in six “Fight of the Night”-worthy clashes.
However, the age and wear and tear have caught up on him in his recent bouts, losing five of his last six fights (The fight against Niko Price in September 2020 was ruled a no-contest after Price tested positive for marijuana). His last match against Alex Moreno on May 8, 2021, was an indication of his fading star power as he fell via technical knockout in the first round.
The fight against Lauzon is the co-main eventer for this card and is highly expected to steal the spotlight from the Kattar-Emmett main event. It might be also a great indicator if Cerrone still has it or if he has better hang up his fighting gloves for good.
Joe Lauzon
Joe Lauzon is back in the octagon after a 32-month hiatus. The owner of the second-most post-fight bonuses in UFC history (15-tied with Nate Diaz) has been superb in the UFC and has been into several matches with former champion Anthony Pettis, Jim Miller, Jamie Varner, George Sotiropoulos, Sam Stout and Kenny Florian to name a few.
However, Lauzon has been out of the UFC scene since October 18, 2019, after winning over Jonathan Pearce in one round. The long break could be a blessing for J-Lau as he is fresher and well-rested but it can also be a curse as he might get rusty in the early rounds. Lauzon’s rival for this match is not even a pushover as Cerrone has been into several UFC clashes.
Expect Lauzon to respect Cerrone in the early parts of the match before he unleashes his offense and attempts to beat the Cowboy in the later rounds.

Cerrone vs. Lauzon Summary
Online UFC odds favor Cerrone over Lauzon due to his ability to endure and beat his foe in the latter rounds. However, Lauzon is a patient fighter who will try to position himself for a submission or a technical knockout. It will be a fight of the year candidate considering how these fighters perform every fight but the octagon rust could be a factor for both fighters as they have not fought for a combined 45 months.
