The Walk-On Who Made Good
On the whole, Stetson Bennett is a remarkable betting on college football story. The Senior from Blackshear, Georgia, arrived as a walk-on without a scholarship. But unlike so many players that hit the transfer portal, Bennett stuck with Georgia. And as other quarterbacks left or got hurt, he moved up the depth chart. Last year he emerged as a starter before losing his job late in the year to JT Daniels. But when Daniels was injured, Bennett reclaimed his position and became a bet on NCAAF asset.
Overall, Bennett improved from a 128.7 QB rating this year to a 178.0 rating in 2021. But Bennett didn’t play well in the SEC Championship Game. Thus, some fans and gamblers derisively called him “Rudy” after the famous walk-on from Notre Dame portrayed in a movie. But against Michigan, Bennett was lights out. Now he is one win away from making history.
The Backup Who May Be Called for Relief
Georgia backup quarterback JT Daniels is a junior that transferred from USC in 2020. By contrast to Bennett, Daniels was a highly touted and coveted recruit. Last year, Daniels appeared to win the starting job after taking over for Bennett and posting a 178.5 QB rating. But this year, he slid back and has been injured. Still, the perception is that if Bennett struggles on Monday night, Daniels will be called on for a bailout.
The Heisman Trophy Winner
And then there is Alabama quarterback Bryce Young. The sophomore out of Pasadena, California, won the 2021 Heisman Trophy after his stellar performance in the SEC Championship Game. Alabama running back Brian Robinson rushed for 1275 yards, 5.1 yards per rush, and 14 touchdowns. Also factoring were receivers Jameson Williams and John Metchie III. Williams had 75 catches, 1507 yards, and 15 touchdowns. In comparison, Metchie added 1142 yards on 96 catches and eight TDs.
In sum, Georgia running backs Zamir White and James Cook averaged 5.3 yards per rush or better. Tight end Brock Bowers was the top receiver with 52 catches, 846 yards, and 12 touchdowns.
